Agriculture & Livelihoods
Agriculture & Livelihoods.
A key focus of Caritas Nigeria agriculture and livelihoods intervention is on improving nutrition of children and vulnerable groups by ensuring that local communities are supported to look within to identify locally available food that can provide the required nutrients through sustainable agriculture and income generation activities. Our interventions have not only boosted local economies but also empowered individuals and families, fostering self-reliance and improved quality of life across the regions we serve.
Food insecurity has become one of the biggest challenges across many countries, especially Africa. According to the World Food Program, the number of food-insecure Nigerians increased significantly, from 66.2 million in Quarter 1 of the year 2023, to 100 million in Quarter 1 of 2024, with 18.6 million facing acute hunger and 43.7 million Nigerians showing crisis-level or above crisis-level hunger coping strategies as of March 2024. The World Bank Group defines food security as when all people, at all times, have physical and economic access to sufficient safe and nutritious food that meets their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life.

Caritas Nigeria’s Agriculture and Livelihoods initiatives have significantly impacted numerous lives by enhancing agricultural productivity, promoting sustainable climate-smart farming practices, and improving food security while also addressing issues of climate change which have had adverse effects on agricultural outputs of farmers and communities in Nigeria. Over the years, through different interventions, Caritas Nigeria has supported farmers and communities to increase their farm output, enhance food security and develop resilient livelihoods.
Currently, Caritas Nigeria is implementing stand-alone agriculture and livelihood interventions as well as sub-projects as components of larger programs to ensure access to food and improve the livelihoods of vulnerable groups in communities for sustainable living and to “End Hunger by 2030.”
